The story

Bayview grew up around Butchertown, the slaughterhouse district where cattle were once driven down Third Street, and the heavy industry of the city's southeastern flats. During World War II, thousands of African-American workers came to labor at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, and the neighborhood became the heart of Black San Francisco. For decades the area was underserved by transit until the Third Street Light Rail Project brought the Muni Metro T line to the corridor in 2007. Today the Third Street corridor holds the largest concentration of Black-owned businesses in the city, anchored by the 1888 Bayview Opera House.
