Open Mission Bay on the map →The story
Mission Bay began as tidal marsh, filled in over the late 1800s to become wharves and Southern Pacific railroad yards. After the rail yards shut down, the land sat largely vacant for decades until a roughly 300-acre redevelopment — the city's largest since Golden Gate Park — broke ground in the late 1990s. UCSF opened its Mission Bay research campus in 2003 with Genentech Hall, anchoring what became one of the nation's largest biomedical university expansions and seeding a cluster of biotech companies. The Warriors' Chase Center arena followed in 2019, and new waterfront parks have continued to open into the 2020s.
