Open Outer Mission on the map →The story
The Outer Mission grew up in the 1910s as a southern extension of the Mission District, along the old road out of town that became Mission Street. The neighborhood's southern blocks of Mission Street follow the route of El Camino Real, the historic road linking San Francisco down the Peninsula. Once farmland that supplied the city with produce, it filled in during the early 20th century with modest single-family homes served by streetcar and Southern Pacific rail lines. Early residents were largely Irish and Italian American; by the late 20th century the area became a working-class enclave home to many Latino and Filipino/Asian families. Many of its streets carry Native American tribe names — Cayuga, Onondaga, Seneca — drawn from 1860s 'West End Homestead' maps.

Gardener Demetrio Braceros, a Filipino immigrant, spent 1986–2008 transforming Cayuga Playground, carving hundreds of wooden statues — the Arts Commission later counted 376.
One of BART's busiest stops
Balboa Park Station at the neighborhood's edge is the busiest BART station outside downtown San Francisco, an intermodal hub for BART, Muni Metro, and many bus lines.
A single-family enclave
The district is overwhelmingly attached single-family homes, long one of the city's few remaining low-rent and middle-class residential pockets.
Salvadoran & Peruvian corridor
The Mission Street strip is lined with pupuserias, panaderias, and Peruvian and Guatemalan kitchens rather than national chains.
