The story

Lone Mountain takes its name from a prominent hill that, beginning in the 1850s, anchored a cluster of grand Victorian-era cemeteries — Laurel Hill (1854), Calvary (1860), and the Masonic and Odd Fellows grounds. After the city banned burials, the dead were removed to Colma and the land was redeveloped through the early 1940s. The Religious of the Sacred Heart built a Spanish-Gothic main building atop the hill in 1932 for the San Francisco College for Women, reached by a grand garden staircase. The college went co-ed as Lone Mountain College in 1969 and was acquired by the University of San Francisco in 1978, which still operates it as the Lone Mountain campus next to St. Ignatius Church.
