The neighborhood sits on land once part of the holdings associated with railroad magnate Charles Crocker, and it takes the second half of its name from Amazon Avenue in the adjacent Excelsior. Subdivided in the early 20th century, it was built out largely with modest single-family homes through the mid-century, in a mix of Marina, Arts and Crafts, Victorian, Edwardian, and Mid-Century Modern styles. It remains slightly more affluent than the neighboring Excelsior while sharing much of that district's diversity, including a large Filipino community. The large Crocker Amazon Playground borders the neighborhood to the north, and John McLaren Park, the city's third-largest park, sits just to the east.

A sunnier corner
Set in the city's southeast, the neighborhood tends to escape the heaviest coastal fog.
