Open Glen Park on the map →The story
Glen Park grew around Glen Canyon, a rugged ravine that in the 1880s held an amusement park, a small zoo, and — less charmingly — a dynamite works that occasionally blew up. Streetcars and later BART (1973) turned it into a commuter-friendly enclave. It remains a small, leafy neighborhood with a compact “village” downtown where Diamond and Chenery meet.
Things most people don’t know
A wild canyon in the city
Glen Canyon Park is a rugged ravine with rock-climbing outcrops and Islais Creek — one of the last free-flowing creeks in San Francisco — a pocket of the landscape as it was before the city.
Amusement park & dynamite
In the 1880s the canyon held a popular amusement park and zoo. It also hosted a dynamite-manufacturing works whose periodic explosions rattled the early neighborhood.
Small neighborhood, big transit
Glen Park BART (opened 1973) makes this tiny village one of the most transit-convenient spots in the city — a quick ride to downtown, the East Bay, or SFO.
A bookstore with a beat
The village's anchor is Bird & Beckett Books — a beloved independent bookstore that doubles as one of the city's most dedicated live-jazz venues.
A sheltered sunny pocket
Tucked into a valley east of Twin Peaks, Glen Park catches more sun and less wind than the foggy neighborhoods just over the hill to the west.
