Open Treasure Island on the map →The story
Treasure Island was built in 1936-37 atop the Yerba Buena Shoals to host the 1939-40 Golden Gate International Exposition, a World's Fair celebrating the new Bay and Golden Gate bridges. It was meant to become San Francisco's airport, but the U.S. Navy took it over during World War II as Naval Station Treasure Island, which it operated until the base closed in 1997. Since the Navy's departure it has been a modest residential community, and is now the site of one of the largest redevelopment projects in the country, adding thousands of new homes, high-rises, parks, and ferry service. The Art Deco Building One, the former Administration Building, remains a city landmark.
