The story

The Financial District grew out of the 1849 Gold Rush as San Francisco's first commercial center, rising on land that was once shoreline and buried ships near the old Long Wharf. Its northern edge overlaps the Barbary Coast, a notorious 19th-century district of saloons, dance halls and brothels named after the pirate-plagued coast of North Africa. As banks and trading houses replaced the vice trade, the area became one of the largest and oldest financial districts in the western United States. Montgomery Street, its main spine, earned the nickname 'the Wall Street of the West.'
