The story

The name is Spanish for "good view" — fitting for a hill that looks from the bay to the Pacific. Buena Vista Park was set aside in 1867, making it San Francisco's oldest official park, originally called Hill Park. As cable and streetcar lines reached the area in the late 1800s, developers lined the steep surrounding streets with ornate Victorian and Edwardian homes, many of which survived the 1906 earthquake and still stand today.

Things most people don’t know

The city's oldest park

Buena Vista Park was established in 1867, making it the oldest official park in San Francisco. Its forested slopes climb to one of the highest points in the central city.

Headstones in the gutters

The park's drainage gutters are lined with marble fragments from old headstones. They came from city cemeteries cleared in the early 20th century, and carved names and dates are still visible.

Bay-to-ocean views

From the summit you can see the Golden Gate Bridge, the bay, downtown, and out to the Pacific. The vista is the reason for the Spanish name "buena vista," meaning good view.

A showcase of Victorians

The steep streets ringing the park are famous for grand Victorian and Edwardian houses. Many were built during the late-1800s streetcar boom and survived the 1906 earthquake and fire.

A forested refuge

Once a windswept hill, the park was planted with eucalyptus, pine, and cypress starting in the 1890s. Today its dense canopy shelters owls, hawks, and migrating songbirds in the heart of the city.
