The story

The 'Tenderloin' nickname is widely traced to a vice-era police culture in which officers working this lucrative beat could afford the finest cut of meat — the tenderloin — borrowing the name from a similar district in New York. After the 1906 earthquake the area filled with single-room-occupancy (SRO) hotels for transient workers, and by the 1920s it was the city's nightlife and speakeasy quarter. The fall of Saigon in 1975 brought waves of Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian refugees, who built the businesses that became 'Little Saigon' along Larkin Street. Today the Uptown Tenderloin Historic District protects the world's largest collection of historic SRO hotels.

Little Saigon

In 2004 the city designated the Larkin Street corridor between Eddy and O'Farrell as 'Little Saigon,' honoring the Vietnamese community rooted here since the 1970s.
