The story

The enclave sits on the northeast flank of Bernal Heights, built on land that was once part of Rancho Rincon de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo, a Mexican land grant. Peralta Avenue and the neighborhood take their name from the prominent Peralta family of Spanish-era California land-grant holders. Like much of Bernal, the area's slopes proved too steep for a full street grid, so paths and public stairways were threaded between the hillside lots. Modest early homes and gardens filled in along these winding streets, giving the pocket its quiet, hidden-away character.
