Open Inner Sunset on the map →The story
Through the 1860s–1880s the Inner Sunset was open sand dunes dotted with dairies, roadhouses, and dynamite works on the city's western edge. Development took hold after entrepreneur Aurelius Buckingham began building near 5th Avenue and Lincoln Way in 1887, and accelerated with the 1894 California Midwinter Exposition staged in adjacent Golden Gate Park. UCSF planted its medical campus uphill on Parnassus Heights in 1897, a presence that still shapes the neighborhood. Streetcar service through the new Sunset Tunnel and the N-Judah line (Mayor 'Sunny Jim' Rolph drove the first car in 1928) finally tied the once-remote 'outside lands' to downtown, filling the blocks with homes.
