The story

Just east of Haight-Ashbury and folded into the historic Western Addition, the Lower Haight filled with streetcar-era Victorian flats in the late 1800s, many surviving the 1906 quake. Long tied to the neighborhood's Black community, it became a 1990s hub of DJ and house-music culture, and its dive bars, cafés, and record and skate shops still define a scrappy, creative character.

Things most people don’t know

A beer-bar legend

Toronado opened at 547 Haight in 1987 and earned national fame for its deep, ever-rotating craft and Belgian draft list — a cash-only temple for beer pilgrims.

DJ and house-music roots

In the 1990s the Lower Haight was a hub of San Francisco's underground DJ and house-music scene, anchored by its record shops.

Victorians that survived 1906

The strip is lined with streetcar-era Victorian and Edwardian flats, many of which came through the 1906 earthquake intact.

Western Addition heritage

Part of the historic Western Addition, the area is long tied to San Francisco's Black community and its cultural legacy.
