Open Lake Street on the map →The story
Lake Street takes its name from Mountain Lake, one of the last natural lakes in San Francisco, fed by a chain of dunes and springs along the Presidio's southern boundary. Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza camped at the lake in March 1776 while scouting sites for the Presidio and Mission. The surrounding Richmond District sand dunes were subdivided and developed in the early 20th century, when builders erected the large, architecturally rich single-family homes that still define this prosperous corridor today.
Things most people don’t know
A real natural lake
Mountain Lake is one of San Francisco's few remaining natural lakes. Long degraded by runoff, it underwent a major restoration in the 2010s that returned native plants and wildlife to its shores.
Anza camped here in 1776
Juan Bautista de Anza's expedition made camp at Mountain Lake in late March 1776. From here he set out to choose the sites for the Presidio and Mission Dolores, founding the city.
Mountain Lake Park
The lake anchors a beloved green park with playgrounds, tennis courts, and trails. A path connects directly into the Presidio and the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail.
Grand period homes
Lake Street is known for its large, well-kept early-20th-century houses in Mediterranean, Tudor, and period-revival styles. It is one of the Richmond's most affluent and architecturally distinguished residential streets.
On the Presidio's doorstep
The street runs along the Presidio's southern edge, giving residents quick access to forested trails, scenic overlooks, and the national park's vast open space.
