The story

Now-residential streets here were once the windswept sand dunes of the 'Outside Lands' on San Francisco's far west side, long considered too remote to settle. The Park and Ocean Railroad began bringing weekend crowds to Ocean Beach in 1883, but the dunes remained mostly empty until the 1920s and 1930s. Developers including Henry Doelger took advantage of new FHA loans to build row upon row of affordable stucco single-family homes. From 1934 to 1941 Doelger was the largest homebuilder in the country, putting up roughly two houses a day, and by just after World War II the dunes had been filled with a sea of these row houses.
