Westwood Park was developed in 1916 by the prominent San Francisco real estate firm Baldwin & Howell on roughly ninety acres of former Sutro land near the old Ingleside Racetrack area, marketed as a 'residence park' for families of average means. The firm laid out a signature plan of curving, concentric oval streets, bisected by Miramar Avenue, with nearly every street avoiding a straight line. More than 650 craftsman- and Mediterranean-style bungalows were built, the majority in the 1920s, many designed by architects Charles F. Strothoff and Ida F. McCain. Residents formed the Westwood Park Association on March 22, 1917, and the neighborhood remains governed by single-family deed restrictions. Architect Louis Christian Mullgardt designed the brick entrance gateways and pillars, now City Landmark No. 314.
