Open Upper Market on the map →The story
Upper Market Street grew up as a transit spine, carrying cable cars and then electric streetcars up from downtown toward Eureka Valley. The 1980 opening of the Castro Street Muni Metro station cemented it as a transfer hub, while the historic F-line streetcars still rumble past. In recent decades the corridor between the Castro and Church Street filled in with mixed-use development, new condos rising beside Victorian flats and linking the Castro, Duboce Triangle, and Mission Dolores into one walkable, transit-rich strip.
